First Day Tips For Locum Tenens

Whether the job is only for a day, a week, or even a few months, locum tenens workers are integral to a healthcare facilities’ efficiency, and the first day of their job is crucial in setting them up for success. To ensure that their first day goes smoothly, healthcare facilities should keep these tips in mind to maximize the positive impact of a first day on the job for contract workers.

  • Familiarize Them With the Facility:

To ensure that locum tenens physicians have a successful first day, make sure to give them a tour (ahead of time if possible) and equip them with a map in case their memory fails. Nothing will derail a workday quite like getting lost or having to ask for directions!

  • Keep Orientation Short, But Concise:

Orientation times can vary based upon the job requirements, but keep it simple and adjust to the needs of the individual. Sometimes they may benefit from shadowing a fellow clinician after a concise training, and others may prefer to get down to the knitty-gritty details in training. It is up to you to provide them with what they need on an individual basis, but ultimately the goal is to get them to work, so make sure they complete training in an efficient manner.

  • Outline their Duties:

This may or may not come up in orientation, but if there is paperwork to be done, or labs to be drawn, or any other administrative duties to be done on the job, make sure they are aware of them before their first day working with patients.

  • Connect With Appropriate Contacts:

There will likely need to be someone to connect the locum tenens physician with ahead of time to ensure that their first day goes smoothly–whoever is in charge of delegating or assigning the employee to the appropriate area is someone that the locum tenens needs to be connected to before or at the very beginning of their first day. This way, instructions are clear and first-day anxiety is minimized.

Following this advice can assist healthcare facilities in achieving better success by ensuring that your new locum tenens physician is adequately prepared and can meet your expectations. Being prepared for their first day makes everyone happy in the long run, and everyone can turn their focus to what really matters–providing patients with the best experience.
